Frequently Asked Questions

Does Medicare cover Pilates?

Typically, Medicare will not cover the cost of your Pilates sessions. However, if you have a GP referral, you can access the Medicare Team Care Arrangement (previously called EPC). With this, you will be able to receive a partial rebate on 5 of your Pilates-informed physiotherapy sessions per calendar year.

Can seniors do Pilates?

Absolutely! Pilates focuses on balance and stability, so it’s a fantastic way for seniors to exercise. Qualified Physios always run our sessions to ensure that the prescription of exercises is safe and informed by the most current medical research.

How is Pilates different from other forms of exercise?

Pilates uses various machines with springs and pulleys to challenge your core stability and strength while you perform functional movements in a controlled manner. The loads you work against are never maximal so the exercises are safe but still need skilful control to complete. This is the optimum way to focus core muscle activity.

Is Pilates part of physiotherapy?

Traditionally, Pilates training is not included at an undergraduate level for physiotherapists. However, at Bend + Mend, our physios have specific training to provide Pilates-informed physiotherapy sessions. These sessions combine Pilates-inspired exercises with a physiotherapist’s knowledge of exercise prescription and training. Your sessions will be safe, effective and goal-driven.

What is the difference between Pilates and yoga?

The main difference is that yoga often involves exercises that focus on improving flexibility and increasing motion range completed on the floor (or on a mat). Meanwhile, Pilates involves exercises on specific equipment that promotes core balance and strength while also taking your body through ranges of motion.

How does Pilates change your body?

Depending on your goals, Pilates can be used to perform all sorts of exercises across many different body parts and areas, so the results are both many and varied. Some people may experience muscle toning in their abdominal and gluteal regions. Meanwhile, others may improve posture to an upright and healthy position when standing or sitting. Generally, most people enjoy the benefits of stronger core muscles and better movement control.
