In 2009/10 I had the pleasure of working with Carlton Football Club (AFL) in Melbourne. During these two years our physiotherapy team developed a pilates rehabilitation program to prevent common football injuries such as groin, knee and shoulder injuries, just to name a few.
Individual sessions aimed at increasing awareness, relaxing overactive dominant muscle groups and activating core stability muscles.
After individual sessions we ran reformer group classes for maximum of 6 footballers. Over the two years these activity specific exercises were found to enhance core stability muscles and body awareness, leading to a prevention of injury.
The Carlton Football Club now designates two pilates sessions a week for players at an A grade level.
