What is Sports Physiotherapy?

Sports physiotherapy is the best treatment for managing pain and improving function after a sports injury. Sporting injuries differ from damage you may experience in everyday life, as athletes strain their muscles, joints and bones to their limits. A Physiotherapists’ job is to assess and heal your body’s strength, flexibility, balance, mobility, and muscle function.

Recovery timelines can differ greatly between individuals, but sports physio is here to ensure that you can get back into the game ASAP, regardless of the level of competition you are playing.

What to Expect at a Sports Physio Session

When you enter any of our clinics, both conveniently located in the heart of Sydney CBD, you can expect various sessions committed to promoting healing. While your initial session will be 45 minutes, all follow-up sessions are 30 minutes.

In each session, you can expect:

  • Professional and personalised care from someone you trust
  • A clear diagnosis of what the problem is
  • A tailored treatment and recovery plan to relieve your pain and meet your goals
  • Manual therapy to restore pain-free movement
  • Specific outcome measures to monitor your progress towards your goals and return to play
  • Tailored exercise rehabilitation to build a more resilient you and prevent recurrent injury

Injury Prevention for Sports

Bend+Mend works on a case-by-case basis, with your well-being entrusted to a physiotherapist that holds a special interest in your particular injury. This means that our exercises are specifically tailored to your needs, considering your current body condition and where it needs to be in the future.

Just a few of the injury prevention strategies that Bend+Mend offers are:

Sports Injury Management

If you cannot function due to an injury caused by sport, it is imperative to use physiotherapy to manage your symptoms.

For a patient in sports injury management, inaction is the biggest cause of further complications in life. Bend + Mend supports each patient, ensuring the continuous journey of managing recurring and chronic sports injuries seems effortless.

These sessions can include joint manipulation or massage therapy, but management is also about being aware of your body and its limits. While you may be keen to get back into your exercise regime, it is imperative that it is done with a full understanding of your current and future abilities.

With the help of Bend + Mend, however, it will not be long until you are back to the sport you love with full mobility and no pain.

Sports Injury Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation from a sports injury can be lengthy, but it is important to minimise the chance of recurring injuries. At Bend+Mend, we assess each patient and tailor the rehabilitation process to their body’s symptoms and needs.

Our physiotherapists may prescribe various strength and conditioning exercises to ensure full manipulation of the musculoskeletal system. These exercises are intended to support your recovery by correcting your form and returning full mobility to your joints and muscles.

It is our intention to improve your body naturally and gradually; without the invasive nature of surgery.

Our injury rehab programme might be best for you if you have a chronic or recurring sports injury.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear or bring for my sports physio appointment?

For Physiotherapy appointments, we have gowns and shorts available for you to change into, but feel free to bring your own exercise clothes if you prefer.

Please bring along any doctor’s referral letters, scan or x-ray results you have, and your private health insurance card so you can claim for your treatment on the spot.

What is the difference between sports physiotherapy and regular physiotherapy?

The key difference between sports therapy and physiotherapy lies in the difference in injuries regularly treat. While daily or work life can create a variety of issues with your muscles or joints, these do not quite compare to the severity of those caused by being an athlete.

The overuse of muscles, as well as common strains and tears, can all add up. Sports physiotherapists have experience in therapy on top of usual physiotherapy, and thus are more capable of addressing these issues.

Additionally, physiotherapists who specialise in exercise therapy have often worked with sports teams. This means that they can assess injuries from all different kinds of sports, from both minor to professional levels of play.

Do I need a referral to see a sports physio?

No, you do not need a Doctor’s referral. You can book in with us whenever you require an appointment to see one of our physiotherapists.

How many sessions will I need for injury rehabilitation?

When one of our sports physiotherapists assess your case, they will tell you how many sessions you will specifically need for full rehabilitation. However, on average, you will need 5-8 treatments to see results.

If you are interested in starting sessions with us, you can choose the appointment time and date best suited for you on our contact page.
