Dancing To Keep Fit

I’ve talked in previous posts about dance being a great way to keep fit, but I thought it might be useful to outline some different types of dance classes and what each has to offer in terms of health and fitness.

Zumba is a type of dance that has become more popular in the world of fitness lately. Zumba can be described as a Latin inspired dance fitness program which incorporates choreography from a number of different styles of dance. In a typical dance class, counts are used, however in Zumba the class follows the music with repetitive steps. Some of the styles incorporated include hip-hop, salsa, samba, meringue, mambo and martial arts. The classes are designed for all levels of ability, including beginners and are both a good time and a good workout!

Hip-hop refers to any style of dance that is primarily danced to hip-hop music, including breaking, locking and popping. This style of dance originates from the USA but has become popular world-wide, and is a great way to keep fit! The choreography includes lots of hip, pelvic and waist rolling which is a great way to strengthen the abdominals. Most dance studios offer adult beginner hip hop classes so if you haven’t tried it already, give it a go!

Jazz is another style of dance with many different influences that is generally high energy with kicks, leaps and turns to the beat of the music. Modern Jazz is often influenced by other styles such as acro, ballet, contemporary and hip-hop. There tends to be a bit more of a focus on technique in jazz, but again most dance studios offer beginner classes.

As always when starting any new type of exercise it is important to build things up slowly. If you worried about injuries then don’t hesitate to contact your physiotherapist. If not, book yourself in for a class or two so you can have fun and stay fit!
