Exercise does not have to be out of the question if you are experiencing any leakage or prolapse symptoms. However, it might be best to avoid higher impact exercise initially. The right exercises under supervision can be extremely effective in not only making you feel better because you are exercising, but can also reduce leakage symptoms. A weak pelvic floor is commonly the cause of incontinence or prolapse but it can be strengthened just like any other muscle. Pilates is a great way to strengthen both the pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscles. The exercises can be performed in lying positions and standing and later progressed to upright positions. Low impact exercise is important when starting out to cater for people who may have leakage issues.

It is recommended that you be assessed by a Women’s Health Physio before you commence exercising if you have incontinence symptoms. We will ensure that you will not make the problem worse by doing incorrect pelvic floor activation.
